Massachusetts is a state located in the northeastern region (New England) of the United States, bordering New Hampshire to the north and northeast, Vermont to the northwest, New York to the west and Connecticut and Rhode Island to the south. It was the 6th state to ratify the Constitution. About one half of the land mass of the state is inland with a large peninsula to the east, making up the area called Cape Cod. The Atlantic Ocean lies directly to the east.
It is nicknamed the "Bay State" because of Massachusetts Bay. The state has some large urban areas, a number of smaller industrial cities, and many small towns. Boston is the state capital and is the largest metro area. Worcester, Springfield and New Bedford are other large cities. Residents of Massachusetts are properly known as "Bay Staters".
The American Revolution was started in Massachusetts, in 1775, beginning with the battles of Lexington and Concord.
