Captain Matthew John Rielly was a Starfleet engineer and line officer on active duty in the late 23rd and early 24th centuries. (Star Trek: Avenger: "The Other Foot", "Lost and Found", "A Shining Planet", "An Hour Come Round Again", "Paired Facets", "A Life Well-Lived")
Rielly served in communications billets on the USS Avenger beginning in 2299. The following year, as a lieutenant, he was repositioned as an engineering officer.
In 2300, Lieutenant Commander Rielly was seconded to the prototype USS Ascendant as that ship's chief engineer. When repairs were completed, he returned to Avenger. Later that year, he was promoted to chief engineer, then to commander in 2301.
Rielly was offered command of Avenger in 2316, but declined. ("Paired Facets") At this time, he took accumulated leave to take care of family and personal concerns.
In 2318, during an accidental explosion at the dock housing the Ascendant, Rielly was killed. A well-liked officer, he was mourned by his former shipmates on Avenger. ("A Life Well-Lived")
Previous Starfleet career[]
Rielly graduated Starfleet Academy with the class of 2288 and applied for a billet on the USS America; instead, he was assigned to the USS Knox as an ensign. In early 2289, the Knox and the USS Coronado participated in the evacuation of the crew of the freighter Hidachi Maru before its reactor core exploded.
From 2289 to 2290, Rielly served aboard the USS Oriskany. In June of 2290, while Oriskany was escorting the transport/tug USS Ptolemy, Rielly devised a scheme that deceived suspected Klingon renegades from attacking Ptolemy. Instead, the Klingons were led into an ambush by the destroyers USS Cochise and USS Lysander.
In November of 2293, a military coup took place on the planet Ardalas. The USS Potemkin was sent to contact the leaders of opposition to the coup. A landing party from Potemkin was captured; when they engaged the troops and the coup's leaders then-Lieutenant Junior Grade Reilly inadvertently killed the coup's leader. This led to the restoration of the planet's rightful government. Rielly was demoted back to ensign.
Over the next several years, Rielly served in billets on Star Station Liberty, USS Fury, and USS Renner until his transfer to the Avenger.

Rielly was born in upstate New York, in North America on Earth, to Thomas Rielly, a Starfleet veteran, and Victoria Rielly.
