A medical school is a school that taught medicine and awarded medical degrees, most often a Doctor of Medicine.

Entry into MD programs[]

Laval University, McGill University, Monash University and University of Montreal were notable for allowing medical students to start working towards a MD as a first-entry undergraduate program, while many Lyran medical schools (e.g. Spoiled Rotten University) required two years in university prior to entry into medical school and some Federation med schools required a prior degree for applying. (Star Trek: The Stoneship Files: "Educational Armageddon")

The Lyran Star Empire maintained a central medical school application system, known as the LIMCAS, which allowed one to apply to a maximum of 25 medical schools in one application cycle. (Star Trek: The Stoneship Files: "Off Coverage")

Academics[]

Cardassian MD programs were also entered as undergraduate programs. Sometimes a MD was offered in combination with other degrees, such as a master's degree in medical physics. However, a medicine/medical physics dual-degree program was a rarity among Lyran medical schools, yet they existed in both MD/MSc and MD/PhD flavors. (Star Trek: The Stoneship Files: "Generational Ghosts")

There were 23 medical schools in the Lyran Star Empire that allowed one to do a MD/MSc with medical physics, and they were about as difficult to get into as a regular medical school. Thus Rikert was advised to apply to MD/PhD programs, which allowed him to study two years in medical school before he could begin research. (Star Trek: The Stoneship Files: "Ancient Horrors")
