The Mediterranean class was a frigate that saw service with the Federation Starfleet during the 24th century. (Star Trek Encyclopedia; Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 1: The Ships of Starfleet)
The class was first commissioned in 2339. The class would go on to be one of the fleet's most popular smaller vessels. In early 2370s, Starfleet decided to refit the class for orbital support and core system defense duties. (Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 1: The Ships of Starfleet)
