Melanie Reegan was a human Starfleet officer who served as a medical officer in the 2160s aboard the starship Poseidon. (Star Trek: Poseidon - The Birth of the Federation)

From an early age, Melaine, known to those around her as Mel, knew that she wanted to be a doctor like her father. She grew up immersed in the world of medicine. As a child, once the surgery had closed for the evening, she would go into her father's study and watch him work on case notes.

When she was age twelve, tragedy struck Mel's family. Her mother, Anne, died suddenly of Rigellian fever. After this episode Mel worked even harder to become a doctor so that no one would ever have to endure the pain that her mother had gone through. In retrospect, Mel later admitted that she had used her studies as a means to escape the grief that she felt over her inability to help her mother, but since there was little that could be done, she felt somewhat assuaged, although her determination still remained.

After attending Queen's University in Belfast, Mel returned home to help her father run his medical practice. Soon, however, Mel became tired and disillusioned with civilian medicine. She complained bitterly of a "lack of excitement" and "offensive levels of bureaucracy". She opted to enlist in Starfleet, where she felt her skills would be of better use. Due to her prior medical experience, she was placed on a fast track refresher course. The Poseidon was her first assignment.

In her time aboard the Poseidon, Reegan more than satisfied her thirst for excitement. When the ship uncovered a Starfleet plot linked to the known terrorist group Terra Prime, Reegan was commended by her superiors for gallantry during the performance of her duties.
