Mer Ol'Mev was a Tellarite male who hosted the Federation News Service program Countdown: Cardassia, devoted to updating the Federation Alliance's push into Dominion-held territory. Ol'Mev occasionally concluded his program with a "special comment" on issues of interstellar politics, such as the fallout on Bajor from the disappearance of the Bajoran wormhole and the anti-Federation propaganda of Bek Gillen. His sign-off included counting the numbers of days since the First Battle of Chin'toka (51 as of February 9, 2375 by the Earth Gregorian calendar). (Star Trek: Lambda Paz: "Faces in the Crowd")
Background information[]
Based on MSNBC commentator Keith Olbermann. This is made clear by the story's concluding Special Comment, based on the real-life segment of the same name and the sign off "Good day and good luck" as opposed to "Good night and good luck"-- originated by Edward R. Murrow-- to account for time differences of the transmission's reception. The sign-off also includes counting the days since victory at Chin'toka, derived from Olbermann's counting of the days since May 1, 2003 when President George W. Bush declared victory in Iraq, which in turn is derived from Walter Cronkite's counting the days of the Iran Hostage Crisis.[1]
