Meret class

The Meret class was a type of incursion cruiser that saw service with the Romulan Star Empire during the 24th century. The design entered service in 2359. (Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 5: Starships of the Romulan Star Empire; The Dominion War Sourcebook: The Fires of Armageddon)

The class was designed for long range reconnaissance, search and destroy missions, patrol and harassment and as such is a fast and agile vessel.

The Meret has a rectangular main hull with a diamond shaped connecting neck to its command hull. This gives it a teardrop appearance from above and from the side it appears as a gigantic beak. The nacelles are connected by two pylons each, one forward and down from the aft of the main hull, the other from the forward end.

Following reestablishing contact with the Federation the Romulans rushed many Merets into production so to send them over the Romulan Neutral Zone to spy on the Federation. Due to the speed of production many of these vessels suffered a high number of minor system glitches and failures, which required intensive maintenance and upgrades. Merets built after 2368 usually do not suffer from these issues.

The class proved so successful that in 2367, the Tal Shiar developed a variant called the D'viret. Physically identical to the Meret the D'viret had improved sensors and communications. (Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 5: Starships of the Romulan Star Empire)
