Michael Liebmann was a marine biologist & xenologist assigned to the USS Grissom (NCC-638) in 2285.Liebmann was a longtime friend of Admiral Harry Morrow and used his patronage to further his own science career. He had intense rivalry with Dr. Carol Marcus, whom he felt received far too much Federation funding for her projects in terraforming. Liebmann used his influence with Morrow to have Dr. Clive Saunders, at the time the lover of Carol Marcus, removed from the Federation liaison group to the Vulcan Science Council. Since that time Liebmann had been careful to avoid the younger and fitter Saunders, who promised retribution.
