President Bacco

President Bacco in her office in 2380.

Nanietta "Nan" Bacco was a human politician from Cestus III. In the late 24th century, she would serve as Governor of that world, and later, as President of the United Federation of Planets.

She was born on Cestus III in 2292, and would live most of her life in Pike City. Her political career began as a representative of that district. She was elected planetary governor in 2368. During her term of office, Bacco faced numerous challenges, including a large influx of refugees from the newly-created Demilitarized Zone, and an attempted invasion by the Gorn in 2375. In the aftermath of the latter incident, Bacco helped negotiate an historic peace treaty between the Federation, the Gorn Hegemony and the Metrons, an exceptionally rare instance of a non-corporeal species entering into a treaty with corporeal beings. (TNG novels Articles of the Federation, A Time for War, A Time for Peace; TNG comic The Gorn Crisis)

After the sudden resignation of Federation President Min Zife, Bacco became a candidate in the special election for his replacement. Though reluctant to run, she won the confidence of the Federation citizens, and won the election after defeating her key opponent, Special Emissary Arafel Pagro in a hard-fought debate on Luna. (TNG novel A Time for War, A Time for Peace)

In her personal life, Bacco was the mother of Anabella, having divorced her husband Roberto LaManna after realizing he was a con artist. She was also a great fan of baseball, and avidly followed the Cestus Baseball League as a supporter of the Pike City Pioneers. In 2380, President Bacco threw the first pitch to open the League's season that year. (TNG novel Articles of the Federation)

Fan continuities[]

Star Trek: Pendragon[]

During the Federation Civil War, Governor Bacco very openly and vehemently opposed the policies and actions of Admiral James Leyton and his supporters. After the war's end, she further opposed the so-called "Nechayev doctrine" of isolation adopted by the Federation Council. Her leadership was further tested in the subsequent Federation-Gorn Conflict, especially during the siege of Cestus III. Her perseverance, tenacity and bravery served as an inspiration to her people during the six weeks before Starfleet was able to drive off the Gorn forces.
