New Orleans is a city in Louisiana in the United States of America on Earth. For centuries it was a major seaport, located as it was at the mouth of the Mississippi River, the longest river on the North American continent.

Large sections of the city were destroyed in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, but New Orleans was eventually rebuilt to its former glory. The city was one of many on Earth that had lost land to the rising sea levels brought on by manmade climatic change. After World War III and initial contacts with extraterrestrial intelligent species, some of that land was reclaimed with the help of terraforming technology that indigenous Centaurians traded to Earth nations in exchange for the warp drive.
