The New Orleans class frigates were a type of Federation starship on active duty in Starfleet during the 24th century.
History[]
Fanon[]
The class was designed during a period of tension between the Federation and Cardassian Union. The class was designed primarily for military uses from capital ship support, escort duties and direct starship engagements. The first vessel entered service in 2358.
The ship was heavily armed with six phaser arrays and five torpedo launchers, including the three distinctive high-capacity cannons located above the saucer and below the engineering hull. Following its performance in the Dominion War several upgrades were proposed for the class, which included: ablative armor, upgrading to type-X arrays and even regenerative shields, though with the latter it would probably necessitate a larger warp core to power the vessel. (Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 1: The Ships of Starfleet)
Hobbyist's Guide to the UFP Starfleet and Its History[]
The development of the class was between 2340 and 2345. USS New Orleans herself was launched in 2346. (Hobbyist's Guide to the UFP Starfleet, Part 1b)
Non-canon[]
The lead ship and prototype, USS New Orleans, was on active duty in 2333 (Stargazer novel: Progenitor), so it is assumed that construction of the class was authorized at least ca. 2330.
Nomenclature[]
The class and prototype were named after the city of New Orleans, Louisiana, on Earth.
