New Saigon has an unusual climate pattern, due to its being a terrestrial moon of near-earth size orbiting a gas giant that in turn, orbits a binary star. On initial colonization, New Saigon was in the midst of a short "Ice Age" with average equatorial temperatures reaching down to minus 20 degrees Celsius. This "Hard Winter" period is noted as being periodic-when Boojum is at apogee and the New Saigon moon is on the far side, the temperatures drop significantly. Due to orbital mechanics, this happens roughly once every 22 (earth) years, and lasts between 12 and 18 earth months.

despite this, New Saigon is the nicer of the two inhabited worlds in the Moab system, though it was colonized later, nearly (*according to the Vulcan Science Academy's study of local history and historical evidence) two centuries before being found by USS Challenger 7, an early NX class vessel of the Federation Starfleet.

Prior to Independence in 2406, New Saigon also did some business providing Shore Leave for Starfleet vessels, and had one of the better pre-application academies in the Hromi Cluster-academies specifically intended to feed into Federation Starfleet, providing between 21 and 40 academy applications to Starfleet Academy yearly, with an acceptance rate of nearly eighty percent.

The Capital of New Saigon was Brigham, with local cities including New Provo and Smith's Anvil.

After the Fek'Ihri incursion, most of the population of New Saigon was dead, and attempts to remove the Fek'Ihri from New Saigon failed (as did attempts to recover survivors).

New Saigon is, as of 2415, a dead world.
