Star Trek Expanded Universe

New York is a region of the North American continent on Earth, one of the Middle Atlantic states of the United States of America, and the location of New York City, Albany, Cooperstown, Camden City, Ithaca, Babylon and Montauk.

In Star Trek: Accord continuity, New York was divided into two states in 2033, with Western New York becoming the U.S.'s 52nd State. Rochester is the capital. (Star Trek: Accord: "Lateral Drift", adapted from TNG: "The Royale")

Jonathan Archer was born in upstate New York. (ENT: "North Star") On the centenary of his birth, the State University of New York system would be renamed Archer University in his honor. (Star Trek: Avenger: "Nearly a Valediction")

In 2375, New York City -- the region's largest city -- was one of four Earth cities attacked by the Breen due to its having a large population. A total of 22 million people died in the attacks. (The Dominion War Sourcebook: The Fires of Armageddon, Dominion War Timeline)

It seems likely that the vessel was named after the state and not the city, as a Nova-class USS Rhode Island existed.
