A nurse is a health care professional responsible for the treatment for the ill and injured who works in conjunction with, or as a subordinate to, a doctor.
- Beginning in the 21st century, the degree of Doctor of Nursing Practice (D.N.P.) was developed. The conferring of such a degree, after a rigorous course of study at an accredited institution, recognized increased academic and clinical training beyond the master's degree level. As well, it conferred increased scope of authority due to said training.
- An example of a Starfleet nurse with such a degree was Lieutenant Commander Lia Burke, who served aboard USS Enterprise in the 2270s and the Enterprise-A in the 80s. (TOS novel: My Enemy, My Ally)
