Plutarch was a Greek writer on ancient Earth. A quote from one of his works, On Listening to Lectures, adorned the UFS Arcadia's bridge dedication plaque, interpreted through translation as, "The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be lighted."

Some translations render "lighted" as "kindled". This is a matter of debate.
