A prison is a facility designed to incarcerate individuals who have broken the law and have been charged with a crime. On starships and space stations this facility is called a brig.

Prisons were often considered expensive facilities to run; the Romulan Star Empire preferred, when a financial crisis arose, to mass-execute the high-security and the maximum-security prisoners rather than to keep them. The last recorded instance of this happening was shortly after the Evacuation of Romulus, if only to give some room for the refugees. (RIS Bouteina: "Relief and Refuge")

In early 2388, there was a three-way exchange of prisoners between the Hydran Kingdom, the Klingon Empire and the United Federation of Planets. All prisoners exchanged were high, maximum or supermaximum-security prisoners. The prisoners given to the Hydrans were transported to the prison world of Krant. (RIS Bouteina: "Resolution on Krant")
