The Prometheus class was a type of starship that saw service with the Federation Starfleet during the 24th century. The first prototype of the Promotheus class was launched in 2374 as the USS Prometheus. (VOY: "Message in a Bottle")

Schematics for the class were developed as early as 2369, where Admiral Theseus was able to obtain a copy. He intended to have the USS Phoenix-X built in this class. ("Secret Occurrences")

Due to his affiliation with Section 31, it is most likely Theseus acquired schematics through their help.

By 2370, Phoenix-X was in secret-construction, in Cardassian territory, in a failed effort by Section 31 to form a working relationship with the Obsidian Order. Construction was halted when the relationship fell through. While there, the ship was fitted with an experimental transwarp engine. (Short story: The Recruited, Star Trek: Phoenix-X: "Mirrorlyness!", "Secret Occurrences")

In 2371, Smiley O'Brien obtained a copy of the Prometheus-class schematics from Quark, who in turn accidentally obtained the schematics from Obsidian Order exile Elim Garak. Upon returning to the mirror universe, Smiley placed the schematics into construction, to be produced alongside the Defiant class construction. ("Mirrorlyness!")

A few months after the launch of the USS Prometheus, the Phoenix-X, a clone of the prototype, and Theseus' personal project, was finally complete and was launched from the Beta Antares Fleet Yards. (VOY: "Message in a Bottle", Star Trek: Phoenix-X: "The Tiloniam System", "The Tilonian System", "Experimentalism", "Secret Occurrences")

In the Mirror universe, the Prometheus class proved too difficult for the Terran Rebellion to recreate and it took 4 and a half years to construct and launch. In 2375, the mirror Phoenix-X was launched and, soon after, accidentally pulled into the primary universe and destroyed. ("Pure Evil", "Mirrorlyness!")

RIS Bouteina[]

This class version was built with a maximum evacuation capacity of 3,700 on initial units but, by 2385, due to the threat the next generation of MVAM-capable Hydran carriers posed, they were updated to 8,000. The USS Hercules was the first unit and, after the Evacuation of Romulus, many veterans of the Evacuation have pushed for even higher evacuation capacity. ("Relief and Refuge")

Hydran variant

By 2389, the Hydran Kingdom built their own version of the Prometheus class. It was the first class of Hydran starships designed with the cloaking device in mind, unlike most Hydran ships, where the cloaking device was generally considered an afterthought. The HMS Prometheus was the lead ship of that class. (RIS Bouteina: "Hystelic Kingdom")

Multi-Vector class[]

In 2370, Pakled engineer Kod misclassified the Phoenix-X as a Multi-Vector-class starship. The name existed as a clerical error. (Star Trek: Phoenix-X: "Secret Occurrences")
