A provisional officer is any officer given a promotion on a temporary basis. Such a promotion may also be known as a temporary commission, field commission or field promotion.
The Maquis crew trapped in the Delta Quadrant aboard the USS Voyager were given field promotions as part of their integration into the crew. (Star Trek: Voyager)
