The So'jan military command and the Romulan defector Commander Telek L'mar developed a weapon that created highly charged disruptor-style beam, which they called a pulse cannon. After which the criminal known as Tyson Calok assisted in enhancing the beam, allowing the pulse cannon to severely damage Federation vessels, such as when it was used against the USS Apollo and USS Saladin. The damaged that this weapon can do to a Starfleet vessel was speculative at best until a Federation expeditionary force engaged a massive fleet of Revenge-class battleships over the planet of Minark. ("Torment and Woe")
