Lieutenant Caley was a geologist assigned to a landing party on Sumaya. ("The Night the Stars Fell from the Sky") As part of a landing party on Delta-1 Gruis III, he estimated the Preserver-seeded civilization there to have a Richter Cultural Scale rating of B-minus: heavy use of fossil fuels, and no use of nuclear or solar power. During his tour of duty on Potemkin, Caley was promoted to lieutenant commander. ("Ashes")
