The raid on Turtle Bay was an attack by Klingon and Orion forces against the Federation colony Turtle Bay, located on the planet Rabaul III in the Hromi Cluster. It took place on 16 October 2406, during the Federation-Klingon War. (The War of the Masters: "Sound the Alarm", In the Presence of Heaven, Would You Chooose Hell?, For We Should Grow Too Fond of It)

Battle[]

USS Kagoshima, a Shi'Kahr-class light cruiser based out of Deep Space K-7 and commanded by Lieutenant Commander Kanril Eleya, detected an anomalous signal from a traffic buoy in the Rabaul system and, with communications officer Lieutenant Tislon sure that further signals from the colony were being jammed, vectored to investigate. They were joined en route by the São Paulo-class escorts USS Nazareth and USS Leran Manev.

Upon arrival, the small force detected three Klingon birds-of-prey and an Orion Brigand-class cruiser leaving orbit. In a fit of frustration, Captain Kanril insulted the opposing ships in tlhIngan Hol. One bird-of-prey turned and attacked, and was destroyed by Nazareth; the rest escaped into warp. Kanril chose not to pursue, calculating they wouldn't be able to overtake them before they reached reinforcements at New London, and headed for the planet to render assistance.

The away teams discovered that the attackers had systematically laid waste to the city of Turtle Bay, killing or kidnapping all the inhabitants despite a furious defense by civilians armed in defiance of the Colony Act of 2371. ("Sound the Alarm"

Aftermath[]

Video taken by the away teams leaked to the Federation News Network before Kanril reached base. (The War of the Masters: "In the Presence of Heaven, Would You Choose Hell")

Infuriated by the failure to protect the colony, Kanril lost her temper at Rear Admiral Stephen Alcott, demanding a new approach to fighting the war. Alcott agreed, and sought permission from Starfleet Command to conduct a raiding mission into Klingon-held space, Operation Backblast. (For We Should Grow Too Fond of It)
