The reserve officers' training corps, or ROTC, was an alternate method of attaining commissioned officer status in some nations' military services. It incorporated military training into a standard degree program at a civilian university.
Under an ROTC program, officer candidates received a competitive merit-based scholarship to the university, covering some or all of their tuition and costs, in exchange for an obligation of military service upon graduation.
