The Romulan Naval Academy (Rihan: "Phi'lasasam") was the primary training facility operated by the Romulan Star Navy and was located on Romulus. The Academy's primary function was to train officers for the Navy as well as serving as a command training school for experienced officers.

During the early 2370s, a clone of Annika Hansen was the lead dancer of the Academy's ballet troupe, who performed for the Senate roughly once every Earth year. (RIS Bouteina)

Preparation for admission[]

Admission tests were very similar to the early phase of the Starfleet Academy admission process, with the Academy Entrance Competitions. However, the Senate made the Romulan Naval Academy so that most Romulans could be granted a chance to serve the Empire in some capacity and, as such, the selection process is less selective. (RIS Bouteina)

Not all individuals were accepted on their first attempt. Those who weren't accepted on their first try, however, were usually out of favor by both the Senate and the Academy's fauna. There existed fail-safes for those who failed to be admitted, given that one scored high enough in the entry competitions to be admitted otherwise. (RIS Bouteina)

The Senate could issue a special waiver to certain individuals to get themselves enrolled into the Romulan Naval Academy; however, doing so required a letter of approval written by a command-level officer and signed by a Senator. Annika Hansen was the most famous of the Romulan Naval Academy alumni that required senatorial approval to be accepted. This process was also used for non-Romulan applicants. More common, however, was to request the sponsorship of a command-level officer to get another shot to apply for the Academy another year. (RIS Bouteina)

Cadet cruise[]

The cadet cruise generally lasted three to four months, after which cadets were to take their final exams, either on the ground or in space. It was performed by fourth-year cadets and it was not at all uncommon for cadets to be promoted before the end, in which case they were assigned aboard the ship in which they spent their cadet cruise shortly after graduation. (RIS Bouteina)

M'Rex, a Romulan cadet, was assigned to the RIS Bouteina for his cadet cruise and was one of the chefs, as well as transporter operators of the ship. His cabin mate (and also cook) programmed the computer terminal of his quarters to remind M'Rex of his final exams three Earth months later. (The Departure)
