The Romulan ranking system is similar, in many ways, to Starfleet ranking. Romulans are notable for using a word that translates into English as Commander to mean captain.
The fan fiction series RIS Bouteina uses the Romulan names to refer to the ranks of their personnel. All Romulan names are assumed to be used in RIS Bouteina. However, other sources may have another name for a rank, in which case the other source would be referred to.

Though not all flag officers were of senatorial classes, the majority of the most senior Romulan admirals was made up of members of families directly connected to the Romulan Senate.
