- This article deals with the rank used in the MACOs and Marines. For a similarly named Starfleet rank, see lieutenant.
Second lieutenant is the lowest officer rank used by the MACOs and Federation Marines, superior to enlisted grades and subordinate to first lieutenant and captain. This grade is often called a 'company officer' grade for being in companies and platoons. Normally, a second lieutenant commands a platoon containing about 30 marines.
They receive their commission upon completion of Officer Candidate School (OCS) or the Recruit Officer Training Corps (ROTC). An university style education is required to attend OCS and ROTC is a university program to recruit officers into their respective branches.
- MACO lieutenants did not appear in Star Trek: Enterprise to avoid audience confusion over rank names.
This rank is also used in the Bajoran Militia and other armies. (DS9)
The rank is equivalent to the Starfleet rank of ensign, and lieutenant in the Federation Starfighter Corps.
History[]
The term comes from the armies and marines of Earth. The United States Army abbreviation was 2LT; the Marine Corps used 2ndLt.
