Security specialist was a rating given to crewmen and non-commissioned officers who served as members of the security staff aboard Starfleet vessels. They served under the security chief.
In both Federation Starfleet and Lyran Starfleet, the rating of security specialist was also referred to as a security guard rating. (Star Trek: The Stoneship Files, Star Trek: False Vacuum)
