Sergeant is a military rank, the equivalent of which is used by the service organizations of many civilizations.
A sergeant is considered a non-commissioned officer and is generally equivalent to a naval petty officer. The specific grade of sergeant (usually the fifth enlisted grade) generally outranks a corporal and is junior to a staff sergeant.
In infantry units a sergeant typically commands a squad.
