Sharon Mtume was a Federation Starfleet communications officer assigned to the USS Potemkin in the late 23rd century. Mtume's crew bio stated that she had had ten years of experience in Starfleet.

Lieutenant Sharon Mtume

Mtume was the chief of communications of the Potemkin. During her tour of duty there, she was promoted from lieutenant to lieutenant commander.

As part of a landing party on Gaius XI, Mtume was astute enough to calculate the frequency that a Pyramid-like species was using to communicate. ("Miscommunication")

Mtume was one of the senior officers who had a disguised Romulan spy under close scrutiny. ("Do No Harm")

Early life

Mtume was from Charlotte, but her parents were from the United States of Africa. She was fluent in Swahili. ("Miscommunication")

Presumably Charlotte, North Carolina, though there are other municipalities in the Southern United States named Charlotte.
