Sian Gabriel was a Federation Starfleet physicist and engineer, then line officer, on active duty in the late 23rd and early 24th centuries. (Starship Deimos)
In 2283, Dr. Gabriel entered Starfleet as a reserve ensign so she could work with the Daystrom Institute. She consulted on "The Great Experiment", Starfleet's transwarp experiments of the mid-2280s.
Later in that decade, Dr. Gabriel won the Cochrane Award for post-doctoral studies in transwarp dynamics. (Starship Deimos: "Butterfly Effect")
Dr. Gabriel came aboard the USS Deimos at the request of Captain Jeremy Quinn, an old friend. This was only her second deep-space assignment. She was promoted to lieutenant commander and assigned as chief engineer.
- A recommendation for the assignment came from Captain Pavel Chekov.
After Captain Quinn left, the ship was commanded by Captain Mark I. Stone, who was killed by the ship's executive officer, Commander Wolf Klawitter, on Delta Vega near the Galactic Barrier. Dr. Gabriel was then field-promoted to captain and given command of the Deimos. ("Where They Have Gone, We Follow")
Captain Gabriel was succeeded as Deimos 's commanding officer by the ship's chief engineer, Timothy Harper.
- Victoria Avalon's last appearance as Sian Gabriel was in "Siren's Song".
Awards and Commendations[]
Dr. Gabriel has twice been a recipient of the Star Cross.
Family[]
Sian Gabriel was from England, on Earth. ("Leviathan")
Her parents (surname unrevealed) were teachers in the British university system. They moved to Virginia when she was a toddler, and became instructors at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Sian exhibited an early aptitude for mathematics.
Sian attended Anglican church services in her younger days. ("Leviathan")
Around Christmas of 2305, she mentioned that her father and sister were in Cambridge at the time. No mention was made of her mother. ("Together in the Night")
Life before Starfleet[]
Sian entered the University of Virginia as a physics major in 2272 and graduated after only three years. Subsequently, she studied subspace physics at the University of Alpha Centauri, and obtained a master's degree in 2277. It was here that she met her husband, David Gabriel ("Butterfly Effect"), and they married that year. However, they divorced in 2280.
- Sian's brief marriage was first referenced in "No Greater Love..." and the reason behind the divorce recounted by her to Erik Drogo in "Butterfly Effect". She was still wearing a wedding ring 20 or so years after the divorce.
Sian Gabriel continued to use her ex-husband's surname after the divorce. She earned a Ph.D. at the Cochrane Institute in 2281, and then taught theoretical physics there until 2289. Ten years later, she would say that she preferred to think of herself as a teacher. ("Where They Have Gone, We Follow")
By 2305, she had not been in contact with David in several years but he had been on Centaurus, last she'd heard. ("Together in the Night")
