Background
Because of the author's complete and utter frustration with issues surrounding Trek canon, Remington is written as a radical departure from canon that destroys and reassembles in a different order what has been established in Trek. Perhaps this post from the TrekBBS sums it up best (appropriately censored for the wiki):
- "I hate TOS. The constant energy-being-of-the-week plots, the outdated culture evident of the 60s (Kirk's chauvinism, anyone?) and too much crappy other stuff (from someone who's a military history buff, the rank scheme makes no sense whatsoever. Thank God TNG/DS9/VOY remedied that.).
- While the 80s aspects of TNG are pretty bad as well, I'd say that if Trek started with TNG and went from there, it'd be better off.
- Or, I'd be in favor of redoing all of Trek, using Enterprise as the starting point, so you don't have anything anachronistic showing up and the RL technology can be incorporated into the show instead of having stuff that, by today's standards, is outdated yet shows up in the 23rd century of Trek.
- Also, I don't think VOY and ENT were as bad as people say they were. Sure, there were problems, but there were problems with all Trek series, and it's not really right to be solely criticizing VOY or ENT for its problems when the show that started it all is the biggest offender.
- Also, the Marxist/Communist "We're better than you because we don't use money" attitude in Trek is a load of bulls***. Communism doesn't work and the only reason why it works in Trek is because the writers portray it that way. Luckily, when I write my fic, I can take liberty and basically rewrite Trek's history to address a lot of that.
- On the same note, Roddenberry's view toward religion was crap as well. Just because you're an atheist doesn't mean you're superior to people who choose to worship a deity, you yutz. Portraying Trek as abandoning something that, for thousands of years, has provided people with moral and spiritual guidance, is bulls***. Tolerance indeed. Thank God once again for artistic liberty.
- And while I can't address TVH, TFF or NEM because I haven't seen them, I happen to think that, despite popular opinion, most, if not all, of the films are good films. While not all of them are great like FC or TWOK, I would certainly sit and watch through all of them for the entire length of the film."
Remington defers from normal Trek in many different ways. For instance, the economy in Remington is a slightly socialist-capitalist society, based upon the system currently used by the United States. However, there exists more governmental regulation of companies to prevent the abuses of middle- and lower-class people that is prevalent among current US corporations.
