Star Trek Expanded Universe:Merge

This page is considered an official policy on Star Trek Expanded Universe. It has wide acceptance among editors and is considered a standard that everyone should follow. Except for minor edits, please make use of the discussion page to propose changes to this policy.

Merging is the process of joining two (or more) articles into a single namespace.

To suggest a merge, tag the article to be merged with {{merge|Other page}}, with "Other page" referring to the namespace the article should be merged to. On that article's talk page place the reason for the suggestion or include the reason in the edit summary when adding the merge template.

After an appropriate amount of time for other users to comment on the suggest if there is a consensus to merge copy the contents of the article and integrate it into the "Other page".

An administrator then might preform a page history merge to combine the histories of the merger and mergee. This requires an admin as it requires the temporary deletion of a page.

Merging page histories

Here is an example of merging page histories, take the USS São Paulo (NCC-75633) and USS Defiant (NCC-75633) and suppose we want to merge the USS São Paulo (NCC-75633) into the USS Defiant (NCC-75633):

1. Delete the USS Defiant (NCC-75633), in the summary field leave a short message such as Temporary delete to merge pages.
2. Move the USS São Paulo (NCC-75633) to USS Defiant (NCC-75633)
3. Restore the deleted history of the USS Defiant (NCC-75633).
4. Edit the USS Defiant (NCC-75633) to reflect the merging of the article.
