Star Trek Online: Literary Challenge

The Star Trek Online: Literary Challenge was a forum-based game created by Cryptic Studios employee "WishStone", where story topics for Star Trek Online gamers would be posted every two weeks. Users would respond with entries based on those topics, using their Star Trek Online characters. The challenges were posted on the Star Trek Online Forums and started in 2011. It changed its format from bi-weekly to a monthly challenge in May of 2014. The challenges led to the facilitation of Star Trek Online: Unofficial Literary Challenges.

Summary

The challenges were created to complement Star Trek Online and allow gamers to "play" their characters through prose. Each challenge was housed within a Forum thread, where player posts counted as entries. Each member was only allowed one entry per challenge and an accompanying discussion thread was created alongside the challenge thread each time.

The Literary Challenges ended in 2014, and the Unofficial Literary Challenges' last challenge was in 2019.

Star Trek Online: Unofficial Literary Challenge

The Star Trek Online: Unofficial Literary Challenge was created in 2014, in Season 9.5, when the Literary Challenges were being posted less and less. They were user generated, based on the Literary Challenges, following their rules and utilizing their challenge suggestions made by the community.

Seasons

Star Trek Online followed a "seasonal" breakdown of its release of in-game missions. The Literary Challenges often reflected what was going on thematically, and through plot, of what was happening within those seasons. Literary Challenges didn't start until Star Trek Online's Season 4. Unofficial Literary Challenges didn't start until Star Trek Online's Season 9.5.

There were no literary challenges during Seasons 1 to 3 of Star Trek: Online.
