Starfleet: The First Era was the first Enterprise-era PBEM sim group on the internet, launched in 2002. As of 2013, the group is still active.

During its early history, The First Era was set during the run of Star Trek: Enterprise; while the show was still airing its first season, the sims' timeline was set a year or so out, in order to allow for more NX-class ships to be in play. This unfortunately led to some inconsistencies with later aired episodes, and The First Era did its best to resolve the conflicting data. In 2002, The First Era's fleet included the following ships:

The Trope eventually crashed, and the survivors founded the New Darwin Colony, which became an early Earth Starfleet outpost.

The First Era's internal chronology progressed roughly concurrent with real time. As of January 1, 2017, the current "sim year" is 2167, several years after the founding of the United Federation of Planets. TFE's active sims include:

  • USS Yorktown
  • USS Meridian
  • USS Intrepid (on hiatus)
  • New Darwin Colony
  • Outpost Maxwell Forrest
  • ESS Challenger (on hiatus)

The Yorktown, Meridian and Intrepid are the original NX-class sims, transitioned to the UFP Starfleet. Outpost Maxwell Forrest is Earth's first deep space outpost, designated Deep Space Station K-1, and named in honor of Admiral Maxwell Forrest.
