The Starfleet Marine Corps (or SFMC) is the ground forces combat branch of the Federation Starfleet.

History

During the years leading up to the Four Years War, Commodore Buck Krippney convinced the Federation Council that a specialized ground forces command was vital to Federation security, and victory in a protracted conflict with the Klingon Empire.

In 2235, the Council authorized the creation of the Starfleet Marine Corps. Commodore Kripney transferred his commission to the newly created branch and was promoted to Major General, becoming the Corps' first Commandant. The ranks soon swelled with volunteers, especially from Earth and Andor.

The new Corps proved their worth during the Four Years War. SFMC regiments fought against the Klingons in campaigns on Joia V and Sinbad IV and in numerous other engagements. In the fall of 2241, the Marines led the first Federation assaults into Klingon-held space, and helped end the war with the Battle of Karag II.

Training

Marine officer candidates are trained at Starfleet Academy, and are counted as Starfleet cadets. They receive additional training at Marine Corps facilities, such as the one in Syrtis City, Mars.
