The Talarian Republic was a minor interstellar power in the Alpha Quadrant of the Milky Way Galaxy, founded and dominated by the Talarian species. The Republic's proximity to the United Federation of Planets, Tzenkethi Coalition and the Cardassian Union brought it into conflict with those powers at various times in its history. (TNG: "Suddenly Human"; Star Trek: Star Charts, DS9 novel: Day of the Vipers)

The Galen Border conflicts of the 2350s were one such example of strife between the Talarians and their Federation neighbours. However, by the 2380s, relations between the Republic and the Federation had warmed considerably, and the UFP considered the Talarians an ally. (TNG: "Suddenly Human"; ST novel: A Singular Destiny)

Sector 21947 was on the Federation-Talarian border in the 2360s. (TNG: "Suddenly Human")
