Tanik was a Starfleet chief engineer aboard Starbase 001 and the USS Pollux in 2752, who defected from the Romulan Imperial Navy after disagreeing with their practices of experimentation in the Old Neutral Zone. (Star Trek: 001)
History[]
Sometime before 2752, Tanik took part in biological and chemical experimentation on anyone who would cross into the Old Neutral Zone. This practice is what would drive him to defect to the Federation.
Tanik served as chief engineer on one of the first Chaltok-class warbirds in the Empire, the IRW Chaltok. ("The Last Place You Look")
In 2744, Tanik defected to the Federation and did so with the crew of the Chaltok, which included Commander Vera and his niece Sabinus. ("New Beginnings", "When It Rains...")
In 2752, Tanik was assigned as chief engineer to Starbase 001. He took on the same role aboard the USS Pollux during a mission to find and aid the missing USS Domtar. His experience with Romulan ships proved helpful in deflecting a Romulan warbird, despite nearly butting heads with Captain David Major over withheld information about the role of experimentation the Romulans were playing in Old Neutral Zone. ("New Beginnings")
Later, when station staff except Tanik were assigned to temporal training in the holoarena, Tanik was temporarily relieved of command, prompting him to visit Starfleet Command to protest. Failing that, he visited his old Romulan commanding officer, Commander Vera, who wanted him to look into a lead at Starfleet Medical regarding the lost contact of their crew. There, Tanik saw his niece Sabinus. Upon learning Othoniel Ephraim Rasin was being confined to quarters, Tanik and Thomas Garrison made plans to break him out. Tanik recruited his old tactical officer from the Chaltok, Sonal, and they and several assault teams invaded through the front doors. There, Tanik was able to rescue an unconscious Sabinus, but not before the stun-setting attacks turned to kill and he was forced to fight a security officer to the death. As a result of the overall conflict, there was a litter of dead, including Sonal. ("When It Rains...")
