A task group is a group of starships with a common goal. It is a subunit of a task force. (Starfleet Command (RPG))
The number before the dash is the task force in the Federation Starfleet to which the task group belongs. For example, Task Group 1-2 is a part of Task Force 1.
- In Starfleet Command (RPG) continuity, there seemed to be no more than three task groups assigned to a particular task force, and no more than three task forces assigned to each of four numbered fleets: the First Fleet, the Second Fleet, the Third Fleet, and the Fourth Fleet. It was unrevealed to which task forces Task Group 18-3, Task Group 31-2, Task Group 57-1, and Task Group 57-2 belonged.
