Background information[]
- "The Child" is based on the original script written for the ill-fated 1977 series, Star Trek: Phase II.
- Jon Povill directed "The Child". Povill worked with Gene Roddenberry on the series bible for the original Phase II, and co-wrote several of the first episode scripts, including that for "The Child".
- The original concept for "The Child" was that Lieutenant Ilia, a Deltan and the ship's navigator for its new voyage, was impregnated by a non-corporeal being seeking to experience what it's like to be a humanoid, with potentially disastrous consequences for the Enterprise.
- The episode was adapted for the second season of Star Trek: The Next Generation in the midst of a writers' strike. The character that was impregnated was Counselor Deanna Troi.
