In this continuity, the Tikopais were introduced in 2268 and differed primarily in that the hangar deck was located at the rear of the primary hull, and a aft-facing sensor array was at the stern of the secondary hull.

On their initial commissionings, Tikopais had PB-32 warp nacelles. Eleven years after they first appeared, the extant ships were upgraded to linear warp drive. (Orion Press: Lexicon: Appendix I:3 - Heavy Cruisers)

Star Trek: Arcturus

The Tikopai class was first authorized by the Federation Council in 2268. Based on the successful design of the Constitution-class exploration cruiser, construction of the class was delayed until testing and approval of the new linear warp drive could be completed. With the acceptance of the new warp engine design after the refit of the testbed vessel, USS Enterprise, the Tikopai class was redesigned to incorporate the improvements of the uprated Constitution design. The keel of the USS Tikopai (NCC-1800) was laid during a ceremony at Ishikawajima Harima Industries' shipyard orbiting Earth in 2273, and the ship was launched 11 October 2274. (Star Trek: Arcturus)
