The Tomed Incident was a confrontation between the United Federation of Planets and Romulan Star Empire. This incident, in 2311, led to thousands dying and the Treaty of Algeron. As a result, the Federation was no longer able to research, develop or use cloaking devices and the Romulan government withdrew from interstellar events and contact until 2364. The USS Cantabrian (NCC-607), under the command of Captain Thekla Lawless, was involved in this confrontation, resulting in the Cantabrian's loss and the deaths of the majority of her crew. (Star Trek: The Cantabrian Expeditions)
