The transporter chief (or transporter operator) is a crewmember stationed in one of the several transporter areas on a starship. On Starfleet vessels, this operator is usually a petty officer, ensign or lieutenant in the operations division. Chief Petty Officer Miles O'Brien, was the chief in transporter room 3 on the Enterprise-D. (DS9:"Emissary") Master Chief Petty Officer Joshua Gunn was the over-all transporter chief for the Federation starship Prometheus begining in 2378.
