The True Way was a Cardassian terrorist organization that believed the Federation to be the greatest threat to Cardassian stability. (Star Trek: Deep Space 9)

History[]

At some point prior to 2369, Elim Garak spied on the group for the Obsidian Order. (DS9 novel: Cardassia: The Lotus Flower)

In 2369 True Way had gained a short-lived ascendancy in the Cardassian Union during the so-called "Fist of Revenge" coup d'etat not long after the withdrawal from Bajor. During their brief time in power, they carried out a purge that cost the lives of nearly the entire Berat family and numerous others blamed for the so-called "wormhole sellout scandal," as well as disrupting a Bajoran trade conference on DS9 and nearly destroying the station. Following this abortive attempt at outright conquest, the True Way returned to more clandestine tactics; the True Way itself was never recognized by the Federation for who and what it was, given their use of political puppets who formed the visible Fist of Revenge cabal. (Star Trek: Sigils and Unions, Betrayal--retconned for SAU continuity)

In 2372, the True Way committed their first recognized act of terrorism against the Federation when they placed a bomb on the USS Orinoco, destroying the vessel. Later that year, they also attempted to assassinate First Minister Shakaar of Bajor. (DS9: "Our Man Bashir", "Crossfire")

The True Way reemerged in 2376, where they tried to destabilize the new Cardassian government. (DS9 novel: Cardassia: The Lotus Flower)

In 2391, Meloneus, having developed a Thalaron weapon for his Galor-class vessel, the Serket, claimed to have been operating out of the True Way. (Star Trek: Phoenix-X: "The Nemesis Factor")

At some point prior to 2409, the True Way was resurrected as an organization by Cardassians wanting to return to the totalitarian ways of the Cardassian Union. (Star Trek Online)

The USS Constance encountered a group of True Way, led by Gul Boraj in the Badlands. (Star Trek: Constance: "The True Way")

Tayben Berat and Kanril Eleya both had prices on their heads from the True Way by 2409, with Kanril's running to six figures after an incident on Algira III, and Berat's offering a 25% bonus if he was captured in his Starfleet uniform. ("Past Continuous")

In 2410 the USS Bajor was forced to leave an away team behind on Orvis II to rescue a Bajoran freighter from a True Way attack. (Bait and Switch: "Frostbite")

Later that year the True Way mutated into a new group calling itself the Cardassian Third Empire. During the early stages of the Iconian War the Third Empire overran two planets after the Cardassian Defense Force was withdrawn to Cardassia Prime in fear of an Iconian attack that never came. (Bait and Switch: "Hydra's Reach", Beat the Drums of War)

Alternate timelines[]

In the Pendragon timeline, the True Way's assassination attempt on First Minister Shakaar Edon was successful, fracturing the Bajoran Provisional Government for the next five years. The True Way were also suspects in the attempt to disrupt Project Restoration and destabilize the peace process on Bajor in 2379. (Star Trek: Pendragon: "Restoration")
