Tuition is the name given to the fees charged for the right to attend university courses. Changes in tuition are often considered a socially sensitive topic for a variety of species and eras, like 21st century Humans or 25th century Malachorians. (Star Trek: The Stoneship Files: "Rode the 300")

Alaa was largely considered the greatest Klingon expert on ancient tuition history. (Star Trek: The Stoneship Files: "Rode the 300")

History[]

In 2012, a planned tuition hike of $1,625 over 5 years resulted in a student strike that spanned virtually every tertiary educational institution in Quebec, including Concordia University, Edouard Montpetit College, Laval University and the University of Montreal, which was recorded into an holographic program made by Alaa as a doctoral thesis at Osric University. In addition, a massive protest staged in Montreal drew 200,000 protesters. (Star Trek: The Stoneship Files: "Rode the 300")

In 2401, Malachor V was struck by a tuition hike that was largely unpopular as well, for which the Tuition Crisis holodeck program was used by Brianna Reiss and the crew of the Stoneship as an awareness raising tool. (Star Trek: The Stoneship Files: "Rode the 300")

This particular instance seemed to indicate that tuition fees in Lyran public universities were set at a planetary level or lower.

The Klingon High Council froze tuition fees since the Dominion War until 2401 where tuition was lowered by 300 darseks/year. Nevertheless, despite this tuition freeze, Klingon universities were among the most expensive in the Beta Quadrant. (Star Trek: The Stoneship Files: "The Defector")

In the Silver Moon County, tuition cost 6,640 slips of latinum yearly for undergraduate education at universities like Tampere Jerky University. (Star Trek: The Stoneship Files: "Cruchitude Dump")

Tuition freeze[]

A tuition freeze is a government policy forbidding public universities to raise tuition for students. However, the term can only be used when students actually pay tuition. Several cultures have had tuition freezes throughout history: Klingons, Malachorians and Ancient Earth.

Student debt[]

Closely linked to tuition are student debt issues. Since many students take out loans, in addition to any jobs they may work or any scholarship they may land, these students incur debt. Vincour was one such debtor; Lyran student debtors could apply for a Lyran Starfleet program that would allow one to pay off the student debt while serving in the military, the Educational Debtor Service Program.
