USS Andromeda (NCC-2006) was one of the three Draco-class galactic survey cruisers launched in the late 2270s.

Andromeda, commanded by Captain Chase Rogers, had the remit of exploring one of the irregular clusters in the direction of M-31.

However, in February, 2284, three consecutive subspace communication relays in Andromeda's "breadcrumb" trail fell silent for unknown reasons. As the officers and crew were then not too deeply committed to their mission, they decided to turn back and repair the connection.

The Federation went on a war footing, and Andromeda was redesignated as a strike cruiser and refit as such. By the mid-2290s, it was renamed USS Athabaska. (Hobbyist's Guide to the UFP Starfleet and Its History, Part 1b)

Nomenclature[]

The ship was named after the Andromeda Galaxy, the nearest large galaxy to the Milky Way. It is located 2.5 million light-years from Earth.

The galaxy and constellation, in turn, were named after Andromeda (mythology), the daughter of Cepheus and Cassiopeia. She boasts of her beauty and the deity Poseidon has her changed her a rock where she is threatened by the monster Cetus. She is saved by Perseus. Their story is considered the forerunner of "princess and dragon" tales throughout Earth history.
