The USS Andromeda (NCC-75009) was a Sovereign-class heavy cruiser in service during the 24th century. It was deployed to the Second Fleet.

Alternate timelines[]

In the continuity of Star Trek: Messenger, the Andromeda's officers and crew were mostly killed due to a Dominion experiment in 2376. The Andromeda itself had to be destroyed by the USS Messenger for the threat to the quadrant to be defused.

Nomenclature[]

The ship was named after Andromeda (mythology), the daughter of Cepheus and Cassiopeia. She boasts of her beauty and the deity Poseidon has her changed her a rock where she is threatened by the monster Cetus. She is saved by Perseus. Their story is considered the forerunner of "princess and dragon" tales throughout Earth history.

The ship may also be named after the Andromeda Galaxy, the nearest large galaxy to the Milky Way. It is located 2.5 million light-years from Earth.

Background[]

The rich multiverse influenced the name with Andromeda (TV series) (formally titled Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda) a space opera television series, based on unused material by Gene Roddenberry, developed by Robert Hewitt Wolfe, and produced by Roddenberry's widow, Majel Barrett.
