The ship was named after John Cabot (c. 1450-1500) (Anglicized from Giovanni Caboto), an Italian navigator and explorer whose 1497 expedition to the east coast of North America was the first known European coastal exploration of the continent since the Norse visits to Vinland in the 11th century.
