USS Caelian

The USS Caelian was a Federation Vesta-class starship active in Starfleet from the 2380s until its destruction in the beginning of the Iconian War in 2410. (Bait and Switch: Beat the Drums of War)

History

The Caelian was one of the original eight Vesta-class starships.

In 2410 the ship suffered severe damage during the Battle of Vaadwaur Prime and was declared beyond economical repair and slated for scrap. However, in the face of an imminent Iconian attack on the Sol system, Rear Admiral Zandra Taitt of Starfleet Science hatched a plan to use the Caelian in a suicide run on the Iconian gateway involved in the attack. Her plan called for a skeleton crew to set the ship on course to the gateway and use its deflector dish to disrupt it, then bail out, but the Herald fleet arrived early and forced her to run the operation in person. The technique was successful, forcing the gateway to re-link to a black hole, consuming both the Heralds and the Caelian with all hands. (Bait and Switch: Beat the Drums of War)

Background

The Caelian appears to be named for Caelian Hill, one of the seven hills of Rome, as is its sister ship the USS Aventine.
