The USS Challenger (NCC-1676) was a Constitution-class (refit) Federation starship, named after NASA's 20th century space vessel STS Challenger. She was commissioned in June, 2289.
The Challenger was one of the ships deployed to the Starfleet Seventh Fleet task force, Task Force 31, in 2291. (Star Trek: Challenger Chronicles)
It was rumored that the Challenger fell into a wormhole and was flung over eighty years into the future. It was later replaced by the USS Challenger-D. (Star Trek: Challenger Chronicles)
Nomenclature[]
The starship was named after the American space shuttle Challenger that disintegrated 73 seconds into its tenth mission, STS-51-L, on 28 January 1986. This resulted in the deaths of all seven crew members including a civilian school teacher, Christa McAuliffe.
