USS Challenger (NCC-1863) was a Miranda-class frigate in Federation Starfleet service during the late 23rd century.

Challenger was commanded by Captain David C. Garrovick. (Orion Press: "The Cost of Freedom", "Never Forget", "Return to Xantharus")

In late 2294, Garrovick was ordered to negotiate with the Tholian colony on Alpha Tucanae IV to repatriate them to Tholian Assembly space. (Orion Press: Chekov's Enterprise)

Nomenclature[edit | edit source]

The starship was named after the American space shuttle Challenger that disintegrated 73 seconds into its tenth mission, STS-51-L, on 28 January 1986. This resulted in the deaths of all seven crew members including a civilian school teacher, Christa McAuliffe.
