USS Constellation (NCC-1974) was the prototype for the Constellation-class cruisers. It was in service in both the 23rd and 24th centuries.

Constellation was commissioned ca. 2275. (TOS novel: Honor Blade)

According to the Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 4: Starships of the Original Series Era, the Constellation was launched in 2284. "The Abandoned" (Orion Press) has the same date.

In 2293, the Constellation still held an NX registry number as it completed certification trials. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)

Lieutenant junior grade T'Sara served as the junior helm officer aboard the Constellation between 2314 and 2316. (Star Trek: Courageous)

The Constellation arrived at Deep Space 9 in 2371 to ferry a Jem'Hadar child to Starfleet for study. (DS9: "The Abandoned")

In 2374, the ship assisted the USS Defiant, searching for survivors from the USS Honshu, which was attacked by the Cardassians during the Dominion War. (DS9: "Waltz")

Nomenclature[]

The prototype vessel and class were named after the star grouping constellation, as well as various Earth seagoing vessels and previous starships such as a Daedalus-class starship of the 22nd century, and the Constitution-class starship.
